Please read our Terms & Conditions before making your application (a printed copy of the Terms & Conditions can be obtained by clicking to download here, or emailing By submitting your entry to St. Paul’s, Worthing you are agreeing to accept these Terms & Conditions and you acknowledge that the Terms & Conditions may be changed (whether verbally, in writing or otherwise) by the Trustees of St. Paul’s, Worthing at any time at their sole discretion.


The Worthing Portrait Artist of the Year will be an exciting evening of live portraiture.

12 local portrait artists are being offered the chance to create in public. Selected artists will each produce a portrait of one of 3 sitters over the course of an evening. The event will be open to the public. Sitters will be announced in due course.

This not-to-be-missed event will be open to all. Members of the public will be able to observe the artists at work, and watch as portraits take shape before their eyes. The portraits will be judged by a panel, and a favourite selected. The sitters will also choose their favourite portrait, a copy of which will be made for them to take home.

All portraits will be exhibited at St. Paul’s for the ensuing month – 25th March – 26th April 2019 during which time they will be subject to a Public Vote. The winner of this will be presented with the Bernard Lord Prize for Portraiture on the Friday 26th April, when the portraits will be
available to take home.

The competition will be open to anyone over the age of 18 living within a 20 mile radius of BN11 (see the below map), who must submit via email a portrait they have created in the last 3 years. The originals must be available for a pre-event exhibition, which will run from 5th March – 22nd March. Only 12 finalists will be chosen from these entrants.


To be announced. At least one/two judges will be independent of St Paul’s, Worthing. The judges’ decision is final and will be made at the event. Each sitter will also choose their favourite portrait, a copy of which will be made for them to take home. The names of the winning artist and runners up, and those chosen by the sitters, will be announced via social media and on The winner will also be required to do a demonstration at Seawhite of Brighton, on a date to be agreed.


The winner will receive a cheque for £500 and is non-transferable. There will be two runners up prizes plus a grand raffle on the night.


The Application Process:

  • email 1 still image of your portraiture work to to arrive
    no later than 12 noon, Friday 11th January 2019.
  • your chosen piece of work must have been created within the last 3 years and be
    your own work
  • the original to be submitted for exhibition from 5th March – 22nd March 2019
  • the image should be in JPEG format/300 dpi or max 2MB and be clearly labelled with
    your name (and image title if you have one)
  • you must be available on Friday 22nd March 2019 from 4-10pm
  • you are asked to supply all your own materials, including an easel

Monday 5th March – pre-event exhibition of original entries by successful applicants
Friday 22nd March 2019, 4-10pm – Portrait of the Year event
Monday 25th March – Friday 26th April 2019 – post exhibition with the Public Vote
Friday 26th April – Public Vote Party and prize giving, from 6-8pm


Please make sure that the image you provide to ST. PAUL’S, WORTHING is owned by yourself. Any material submitted by you must not infringe any applicable laws or contain inappropriate content (such as indecent, offensive, defamatory or threatening material).

Entries received after the date and time outlined above will not be considered. The Trustees of St. Paul’s, Worthing reserve the right in their absolute discretion to extend the Closing Date for a reasonable period of time where an insufficient number of the entries received have satisfied the entry and judging criteria, and in these circumstances, the date on which they elect to close the Competition shall be the Closing Date.

Please note: confirmation of emailing an entry does not necessarily mean that we have received it due to circumstances out of our control, i.e. IT issues, wrong email address, etc.

We reserve the right to disqualify your entry if:

a. Your entry is incomplete;
b. You do not meet the entry criteria;
c. You are not eligible to enter the Competition;
d. You cannot be contacted;


Artists/participants are expected to contribute to the positive promotion of ST. PAUL’S WORTHING, and the Event, using ST. PAUL’S WORTHING branded promotional material.

When producing own promotion/publicity materials, Artists must include the official ST. PAUL’S, WORTHING and Event logos. These can be obtained by contacting


Artists/participants agree to their images being used in selected promotional materials (including website, social networks and other media) unless agreed otherwise. St. Paul’s Worthing reserves the right to use selected images and copy for promotional activities other than the leaflet and website in order to promote the Event as appropriate to the medium that the promotional activity is due to be published.

Please make sure that any text, graphics, photos or other media that you provide to ST. PAUL’S WORTHING, and any third party is owned by yourself.


The Trustees reserve the right to make changes to these Terms & Conditions. All changes will be notified and posted on this page or, where appropriate, notified by email/newsletter.
