This August the Madchester era explodes onto the south coast and it’s ready to party. Featuring Happy Mondays icon Bez and the classic songs of Inspiral Carpets, the mighty St Paul’s, Worthing, hosts one of the events of summer 2017. For one night only, a fired up flavour of Mancunian clubland institutions such as The Haçienda is resurrected.
The 1980s turning into the 1990s was a golden moment. In the wake of two acid house-addled second summers of love, guitar bands loosened up to a stoned ‘Funky Drummer’ groove. Clad in bucket hats, fractal-décor hoodies and flared Joe Bloggs jeans, music exploded as the loved-up generation embraced ‘baggy’
Whether you were there in 1990 and want to TARDIS back to tie one on, or you weren’t even born and want to large it with Bez, it’s all going off on 11th August. Don’t miss it!

On Saturday 15th June 2002, Norman was officially cited in the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Birthday Honours List with the recommendation that he be appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire, an MBE no less, awarded on merit for “deejaying and services to music”. On Tuesday 12th November 2002, Norman was officially invited to attend a royal investiture at Buckingham Palace, London where he was duly invested and presented with the highly coveted MBE medal by Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II herself. It is indeed the highest civilian honour yet conferred on anyone from the relatively new field of post modern UK club culture and black music – a fitting tribute in recognition of his many outstanding musical achievements and invaluable contributions to the world of popular dance music in a career spanning well over two decades.

The first time round, Dodgy were only together for seven years but in that time they sold over a million records worldwide, released three albums and enjoyed 12 Top 40 singles, including ‘Staying Out For The Summer’, ‘In A Room’, ‘If You’re Thinking Of Me’ and the massive hit ‘Good Enough’ – officially one of the most played tracks on British radio in the last 20 years.
‘What Are We Fighting For’, the fifth album from the original Dodgy line-up of Nigel Clark, Mathew Priest and Andy Miller – was released on Cherry Red Records in September last year to amazing reviews and was the first collection of new material since their critically acclaimed reunion album, ‘Stand Upright In A Cool Place’ in 2012. It was also the first album to feature new member Stu Thoy on bass who joined the band to help them tour the last album and has managed to hang on in there ever since.
Dodgy believe ‘What Are We Fighting For’ – featuring Vanessa Wilson from the fantastic Ultrasound, is their best ever record, but they’re not the only ones – Cenzo Townshend (Florence, U2, Primal Scream etc) who worked with Dodgy on their first ever record in 1992, heard the demos and demanded to mix some tracks. Similarly, Rob Da Bank heard two tracks and offered Dodgy a slot on the Mainstage at Bestival.
On release of the album in September, the band secured a session on the Chris Evans Radio 2 Breakfast show; the Simon Mayo Radio 2 Drivetime show + a session with the legendary Bob Harris.
Dodgy’s 2012 comeback album ‘Stand Upright In A Cool Place’, was a long time coming, 15 years to be precise since the double platinum selling ‘Free Peace Sweet’. From the rave reviews and many media plaudits that were heaped upon ‘Stand Upright….’ it seemed that the original line up of the band had done the impossible – to reform and make a contemporary and relevant album that surpassed their previous work. Creating a sound with “golden harmonies and echoes of CSN&Y and Fleet Foxes”, and prompting The Word magazine to say “They’ve just made the record of their career by a country mile”, The Guardian described the album as a “revelation” whilst it went on to get 4**** reviews in Mojo, Uncut, Q, The Times, The Mirror and The Express.
Gigs and festival appearances have always been a crucial part of the Dodgy experience, for many they are the perfect festival band. The band have performed at most festivals worth their salt, such as Bestival, Isle of Wight, Camp Bestival, V Festival, Glastonbury, Beautiful Days, Wychwood, Kendal Calling and many more across the UK and Europe

Local charity, Wolfram Syndrome UK, are holding their 3rd 80’s music night in aid of the charity. Music is being provided by Synthony 101 & Murdoch’s Crazy Eyes.
Wolfram Syndrome is a rare progressive genetic condition for which there is currently no treatment or cure. It affects 1 in 770,000 people worldwide with about 90 people, adults & children, diagnosed in the UK. As it is so rare many doctors & other medical professionals will never come across the condition or be aware of it which can cause problems & delays for diagnosing the condition of those that have it. Wolfram Syndrome has 4 main features – Diabetes Insipidus (diabetes of the bladder & kidneys), Diabetes Mellitus (Type 1 insulin dependent), Optic Atrophy (death of the optic nerve causing sight loss) & Deafness; but not everyone has all 4 features which makes the diagnosis hard & they can have varying degrees of severity. Those affected can also suffer with anxiety, depression, aggression, respiratory problems & loss of the gag reflex. Currently these issues are treated separately to help with daily living; for example glasses, hearing aid, insulin injections.
Wolfram Syndrome UK (WSUK) was founded by the parents of a local girl 7 years ago following her diagnosis at the age of 8. There was no help for them here in the UK. Since the charity was started they have funded 6 annual conferences with individuals & families affected having the chance to meet up & to hear about the latest research from the doctors. Everyone has the opportunity to stay over & enjoy a complimentary 3 course meal at the end. They have raised awareness by delivering information folders to the 25 main children’s hospitals around the UK as well as to 10,000 GP practices. 2 years ago the charity purchased a static caravan in Pagham offering holidays to their members at heavily reduced rates as well as to 2 other charities & the public. A large portion of fundraising also goes towards research. In November 2017 recruitment will start for patients to take part in a clinical drug trial which will run over 3 years. This trial is being funded by the UK but due to low numbers of affected individuals it will also involve individuals from France, Spain & Poland. It is hoped that the drug being tested will either slow down or halt the progression of the syndrome, as has been seen on cells tested in the Labs. This is just a ‘sticking plaster’, for our families, says Tracy Lynch CEO & Co-Founder of WSUK. Researchers are still working hard to find a cure for this debilitating condition both here in the UK & the USA. One American research doctor has told us that a cure will be found in our lifetime. Things they are working on now will not only be able to benefit our WS individuals but will also benefit those with vision impairments & Type 1 Diabetes.
By coming along to our Back to Scool night, says Tracy, will help us to continue our work in connecting families & individuals as well as being able to help support those taking part in the trial by covering travel costs. As one young man said to my husband & I at our first families meeting, “ Thank you for doing this, I no longer feel alone!”. This has always stayed with us as we are so spread out across the country. Our daughter is the only person in Worthing with WS. The next closest family is in East Grinstead.
All proceeds from the Back to Scool night will go directly to Wolfram Syndrome UK. Registered Charity in England & Wales. Charity number 1152445.

Warming up for the band will be The STASH Deejays. Playing vinyl around the pubs and clubs of Sussex since 2004, expect a dance-floor friendly selection of Blues, Soul and Funk 45s to get you in the mood.

Fresh from being BBC Radio 2 play-listed, (and RTE1 Ireland and throughout Europe for that matter) international touring and recording artist JO HARMAN hit with ‘When We Were Young’ the first single, featuring soul legend Michael McDonald’s, from Jo’s new studio album recorded in Nashville, titled ‘People We Become’. Although she is used to playing on some of the biggest stages around the world (including being one of only 11 artists playing to 300k people at Parkpop in the hague), Jo also enjoys playing the most intimate of venues with her powerful and evocative ‘piano and voice’ duo show which some critics believe showcase her at her compelling best? Her sincere, heartfelt compositions, widely regarded as being carved in marble, certainly take the audience on an emotional journey and her relaxed banter between songs give a particularly intimate insight into the world of this remarkable vocalist, songwriter and artist
